The Caldon Challenge Trophy

A 50-metre raft race on the Caldon Canal.

A knockout tournament open to 16 teams. The winners receive the coveted Caldon Challenge Trophy.

Rules

  1. Each team comprises two people.
  2. The raft must be made from up to 8 glaze barrels and at least 1 pallet (pallet and barrels supplied by the Hanley Regatta  – barrels courtesy of Ferro Ltd)
  3. Any other material can be used in construction of the raft, but will not be provided by the organisers
  4. The raft cannot be powered by any mechanical or electrical means.
  5. The raft cannot be wider than two glaze barrels laid horizontally.
  6. The races will be supervised by an Umpire.
  7. The Umpire’s decision is absolutely final!

Entrance fee: £100 per team.

Concours d’Elegance

Prior to the start of racing, all rafts will be displayed beside the Canal for judging by the renowned designer (and amateur rafter), Emma Bridgewater. The winners receive the Caldon Concours d’Elegance Cup.

Emma will be looking for:

Sleek lines and clever streamlining
Innovative use of pottery manufacturing materials
Lots of nice shiny bits
A certain je ne sais quoi
